Whatnot is introducing a new commission structure that rewards sellers as their businesses grow.
Under the new system, sellers who reach certain sales thresholds will automatically unlock lower commission rates—potentially as low as 3%.
There is no application or enrolment required.
How will it work?
Your total sales from the previous four weeks will determine your commission rate for the following four weeks.
The more you sell, the lower your rate could become. Each new sales threshold unlocks another commission tier, giving growing sellers more money to reinvest in:
- New stock
- Additional live shows
- Better equipment
- Packing support or staff
- Their own earnings
Exact thresholds and rates may vary by country and product category. Whatnot’s announcement uses the US as an example, where the first reduced-rate tier begins at $15,000 in sales over four weeks. UK sellers should check their Seller Hub for the rates that apply to them.
What does Whatnot charge commission on?
Whatnot calculates commission using the price of the items sold—not the buyer’s full checkout total.
For example, if you sell an item for £10, the commission is calculated on that £10. Buyer-paid postage and taxes are not included in the commission calculation.
This is important when comparing platforms. Another marketplace may advertise a lower percentage while applying it to the item price, postage and other charges—making the actual fee higher.
What does this mean for sellers?
For casual sellers, the standard commission structure remains competitive. For sellers building larger businesses, reaching higher sales levels could now produce significant savings.
The change also creates a clear incentive to run more shows, increase order values and build repeat custom. However, sellers should never chase a lower rate at the expense of their profit margins.
